Key principles behind the group allocations

According to the J.League announcement, the following principles were applied when forming the groups:

  • Snowbelt clubs: Clubs in areas where home matches cannot be staged in February and March due to snow are limited to a maximum of four per group.
  • Same-prefecture clubs: Clubs from the same prefecture are placed in the same group.
  • Regional characteristics: Where possible, wider regional characteristics beyond prefectural borders are also taken into account.

The group names are “EAST” and “WEST” for the J1 100-Year Vision League, and “EAST-A”, “EAST-B”, “WEST-A” and “WEST-B” for the J2 & J3 100-Year Vision League. The new format is designed to reflect regional identities while creating fresh storylines ahead of the 2026 kick-off.
